Ansis Bētiņš & Artūrs Čukurs (LV)
The foundation of Ansis Bētiņš and Artūrs Čukurs' debut album on xKatedral, with the striking title Slavic Folk Songs, is primarily built on songs from the occupied territories of Ukraine.
After Russia's occupation of southeastern Ukraine, the Latvian vocal duo Ansis Bētiņš and Artūrs Čukurs—who have sung together in children's and youth choirs for most of their lives—began collecting songs from these very regions. They have also included other rare, forgotten, and significant folk songs from the Slavic countries in their repertoire.
A distinctive vocal technique characterizing these songs is known as white voice. This singing style is marked by a bright, clear timbre, as well as powerful volume and intensity. It is sometimes referred to as śpiewokrzyk (literally translated: "sing-shout"). Traditionally, the technique was used in rituals such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals, as well as social gatherings, but its roots lie in the everyday lives of working peasants in the fields. The style can be performed both polyphonically and monophonically.
The concert at Lake House offers a meditative experience with rare Slavic folk songs performed a cappella. Only the small cultural venue’s enchanting acoustics will amplify the sound as two young, promising interpreters of contemporary folk music take the stage. Expect a journey that is both beautiful and melancholic, yet deeply devoted—a dark and grand tale of the history of the Slavic people. All performed by two outstanding singers with an exceptional vocal technique.
The concert is supported by Nørrebro Lokaludvalg ♡
